In a study published in the International Journal of Qualitative Methods , researchers investigated the topic of online dating via the lens of hermeneutic inquiry. The results from the three studies will be examined in more depth as I continue to expand my study.

The three studies address online dating from three distinct perspectives. Many journals, such as The International Journal of Qualitative Methods and The Journal of Phenomenological Psychology, may now be accessed online via host websites, owing to the eJournal database maintained by the University of Ottawa.

In this research, there are two narratives: one that interprets online flirting and another that describes the hickey. The data from two earlier studies, one on Internet flirting and the other on hickeys, were analyzed by the researchers.

A researcher is not required to be present in order to do research on a specific group when ethnography is used to conduct the study. Although this implies participation, people may behave differently in front of the camera if it is turned on, or they may avoid the area where the camera is placed if it is turned off at certain times. I am also not surprised that most of the people that are part of these studies range from ages These people that spend almost all their time on the internet, and cell phones, so why not flirt or ask someone out using these devices.

This is a good and bad thing in my opinion, good because this helps people that might be a little shy and nervous when they first come face to face with a stranger. By using social media or texting you get to know the person a little more, and you know what they are interested in and what they like. This is a bad thing because it takes away from the funny awkward moments, or the funny 1st date memories. One last thing, whoever breaks up using social media, texting or even phone calls it might be easier for you at the time but it hurts soo much worse for that person getting the message.

In my opinion it is one of the worst things you can do to someone. I think online dating is fine if it is done in the correct manner. Social media websites can now be used to find people and meet someone who you could potentially be in a relationship with. The only problem with online dating is you never really know if the person you are talking is who they say they are.

If relationships start from a social media website I think that is fine because majority of people today are constantly using sites where they can find people to talk to, however, I think breaking up using a social media website is the wrong thing to do. However, this can also backfire if one puts on a fake persona for the use of attraction with the intent of harming another. I am not very surprised by these statistics, in fact, part of me would have thought they would have been even worse.

Our society is totally technologically driven. So much to the point that not having a social networking site would be deviating the norm. A huge part of the dating game these days also includes technological communication via the computer, phone, and texting.

Much of this communication even being through social networking sites. I am somewhat surprised that most people who online date are , the age where most are out working or hanging out.

I think that the idea of online dating with always have a tarnished image. To me, it seems like a last resort. Nowadays, it seems like dating sites are being marketed differently. Personally, having a computer tell me who I am compatible with is not my cup of tea. I would much rather come across someone in real life, and build a relationship from there.

One stat on the info graph that surprised me was the number of people years of age dating online. I think that shows us just how the perception of online dating has changed. Young people are buying in much earlier in life. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Learn how your comment data is processed. Home About. With more and more people relying on online dating to meet a partner, the act of online dating also gets studied more and more. Here are 11 revelations from recent studies. This phenomenon was observed in a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Women tended to claim that they were 8. Men lied by less—only two pounds—but rounded up their height by a half inch more often.

People lied the least when it came to age. In , dating site PlentyofFish conducted a study in which scientists examined word choice in all 1. In , the research company AnswerLab conducted a study in which they used a Tobii X1 Light Eye Tracker, which recorded the eye movements of subjects who were reading online dating profiles from Match.

com and eHarmony. By doing this, they were able determine where men and women were actually looking while reading online dating profiles. As it happens, men spend 65 percent more time looking at the pictures in the profile than women do.

In , BuzzFeed ran an experiment in which one of their writers built a mock-Tinder with stock photos. The study also found that people preferred a potential partner to be of mixed or ambiguous race instead of a blatantly different race than their own.

OkCupid co-founder, Christian Rudder, confirmed her findings. According to the researchers at the University of California San Diego, the majority of heterosexuals on OKCupid did contact people of another race or at least answer messages from them.

A group of U. psychology professors collaborated on a report, describing the faults of online dating, which was published in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest in According to Professor Eli Finkel , who worked on the report, "We reviewed the literature and feel safe to conclude they do not [work].

This surprising statistic comes from a survey conducted in late by the Pew Research Center. Even more surprising, this is actually a significantly lower number than it used to be.

In , over half of people with online dating profiles never went on an in-person date with someone they had met on the site. Men get more messages if they are Christian, brunette, high-earners, and PhDs. A recent study that claims couples who met on dating sites are less likely to get married has been getting a lot of traction on the Internet. Researchers from Stanford University and Michigan State University surveyed more than people and they learned that breakups were more common in couples who met online versus offline.

They claim that the phenomenon holds true for both married and unmarried couples. Obviously this phenomenon needs to be studied a little more. A study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that 35 percent of the 20, people who responded to a survey met their spouse online. The study also contradicts the Stanford and Michigan State study by claiming that couples who met online have a 6 percent separation and divorce rate whereas couples who met offline have an 8 percent rate.

If you believe that people do marry sooner when they use online dating, then you can also believe that online dating saves you money. A group of researchers at ConvergEx Group calculated that couples who meet online get married after
